Q - Who needs a marine radio license?
A  - Any one who intends to operate a VHF or a MF/HF marine radio is required to be licensed. Operators of a 27Meg radio do not require a license.

Q - Why buy a VHF radio?
A - For recreational boaties, the VHF radio offers excellent reception range, with minimal interference from the boat's electrical system. Modern sets offer DSC (Digital) messaging which is both a safety bonus, and gives much longer range. Water Police and other government marine organisations do not monitor 27Meg frequencies, but do listen for the emergency VHF channel 16.

Q - Which course for me?
A - The MROCP course is required to operate MF/HF radios. These are normally fitted to off-shore cruising and commercial vessels. Recreational boaties usually only need VHF radios, so the MROVCP is sufficient.

Course Details:

  • The course is run over one day, starting at 8.30am  and ending with an exam starting around 4pm
  • Both MROCP and MROVCP licenses are covered in the one course
  • The MROCP exam is 50 multiple choice questions, requiring a minimum of 35 correct answers for a pass. Time allowed is 1 hour.
  • The MROVCP exam (VHF Only) is 25 multiple choice questions, requiring 18 correct answers for a pass, Time allowed is 30 minutes.
  • The exam papers are sent to the Office of Maritime Communications in Tasmania for marking, with results known in 2 -4 weeks.
  • Successful candidates will receive a lifetime license.
  • The course cost is $150:00 for MROVCP (VHF) and $170:00 for MROCP (HF/VHF), which includes radio handbook, postage, handouts and license fees.
  • Associate members of VMR Victoria Point and Raby Bay are eligible for a $20.00 discount.

Course Requirements:

  • You will be required to present a recent, coloured passport sized photograph for your license.
  • Before sitting the exam you will need to produce photo ID to prove your identity
  • Licenses will be issued to persons from 16 years. Younger persons can no longer sit the exam
  • Suggested items to bring along are notepaper, pen, pencil and eraser.
