Q - Who needs a marine radio license?
A - Any one who intends to operate a VHF or a MF/HF marine radio is required to be licensed. Operators of a 27Meg radio do not require a license.
Q - Why buy a VHF radio?
A - For recreational boaties, the VHF radio offers excellent reception range, with minimal interference from the boat's electrical system. Modern sets offer DSC (Digital) messaging which is both a safety bonus, and gives much longer range. Water Police and other government marine organisations do not monitor 27Meg frequencies, but do listen for the emergency VHF channel 16.
Q - Which course for me?
A - The MROCP course is required to operate MF/HF radios. These are normally fitted to off-shore cruising and commercial vessels. Recreational boaties usually only need VHF radios, so the MROVCP is sufficient.
